Research Examines Effect of Vitamin C on Cancer Cells
According to an article in WebMD citing research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Sept. 20, 2005; vol 102: pp 13604-13609), lab tests indicate that vitamin C, introduced into cells, boosted production of hydrogen peroxide which in turn killed the cancer cells while leaving the healthy cells unharmed. According to the researchers the levels of vitamin C needed could only be achieved through intravenous infusion. Currently a safety study on this application is underway. Study: Girls who eat breakfast are slimmer
A study out of the Maryland Medical Research Institute found adolescent girls who eat breakfast have lower body mass index readings than those who don't, with the slimmest of them eating cereals. The study author said cereal fiber, often accompanied by milk and orange juice, may account for the study subjects' lower weight and "those who eat breakfast on a regular basis are more likely to have a structured eating plan throughout the day and consequently are less likely to snack between meals." The Dallas Morning News

Study: Minimal counseling can improve children's eating habits
As few as five dietary counseling sessions over three years can help families improve their eating habits to prevent heart disease, according to a new study. While previous research on weight reduction counseling has shown that intense counseling is needed for successful results, the new findings showed that children consumed less fat and salt after the five counseling sessions. With mounting research suggesting cocoa beans could have health benefits, chocoholics may have a little less guilt about their addiction. An Unusual Study: Daily stress may thwart breast cancer
Women who experience high levels of daily stress are at a lower risk of developing primary breast cancer, according to a new study. The research of 6,689 women over 18 years showed lower rates of primary breast cancer among those who had higher day-to-day stress levels, and researchers say they suspect that persistent stress hormones may suppress the production of oestrogen, a risk factor in breast cancer.
